Summer is on its way and there’s nothing we can do about it. Soon, the cool days will give way to the blistering Aussie summer heat, that will send you running indoors or diving into the pool. In tribute to the approaching heat, we’ve compiled some fun facts about air conditioning to get you in the mood for sunshine.
Air-conditioning was originally designed for books!
Willis Carrier invented the first air conditioner in 1902 for a publishing house in New York. The publisher was having trouble with paper expansion and contraction and issues with their ink thanks to the untameable humidity! The air conditioner was designed to create a more consistent temperature throughout the office to keep everything in working order.
From Books to Movies! Entertainment kept cool.
One of the first places to use air-conditioning, outside of the original publishing house, was movie theatres. People went to the movies to enjoy a break from the heat outside, as well as to enjoy a new movie, so theatres used to release major films in summer to encourage people to buy tickets, coining the term “Summer Blockbuster”.
Global AC Energy Consumption
While we love to keep cool in Australia, it should come as little surprise that the United States is one of the world’s largest users of air-conditioning. The energy consumption for the US to power their air-conditioners alone is the same amount of energy that Africa uses in total each year – for their entire continent.
Is Bigger Really Better?
The world’s first residential air-conditioner was installed in 1914. It stood over 7 feet high, 6 feet wide and it was 20 feet long! Back then, the cost was anywhere between $10,000 to $50,000! That would be like paying $120,000 to $600,000 for an air-conditioner in today’s money!
Only the very wealthy could afford to cool their home with an air-conditioner, so the lower and middle classes were forced to swelter in the heat thanks to the enormous cost.
Thank goodness those days are over!
A Car with Air Con? No Thanks!
The first car to have optional air conditioning was created in 1939 by Packard, but no one really wanted it, because it cost too much, and the air con unit took up half of the boot space! People would opt for good old-fashioned elbow grease, winding down those windows and taking full advantage of those speed-induced breezes.
Go Green, Save Money!
The average family can spend thousands on powering their homes throughout the year, and an enormous portion of that goes towards heating and cooling. Upgrading your system to an eco-friendlier unit can save you money.
Zehn Electrical are specialists in installing air-conditioning units, so don’t wait for summer to be on us before you get your air con system installed, or upgraded to a more cost-effective system. Don’t dread the heat this year. Zehn Electrical can turn those summer nightmares into summer dreams.
